FAB 5: Penncrest QB engineers comeback

Danny Fisher, QB, Penncrest: The Lions appeared to be on their way to their first loss for most of three quarters Friday night against Haverford. That was before Fisher went

crazy and brought his offense back from the dead.

Fisher was responsible for 150 of 185 total yards the Lions accrued, and threw for a pair of touchdowns passes to help lift the surprising Lions to a 2-0 start.

Fisher scampered 37 yards to the end zone late in the fourth quarter, completing the improbable comeback.  He completed 10 of 16 pass attempts.

Jerry Lanier and Brian Ingram:, RB/QB, Academy Park: For this week — and maybe in the future in order to prevent from mentioning them individually in this space — Lanier and Ingram are the Batman & Robin of Delco football, the dynamic duo that is impossible to predict, let alone stop. Let’s start with Lanier.  All he did was rush for 224 yards and two TDs in the 43-31 victory over Cardinal O’Hara, establishing (again) that he’s the best running back, hands-down, in the county. That marks two 200-plus yard rushing games for Lanier.

Ingram has been just as valuable and explosive for the Knights. The first-year starting quarterback gives the Knights much-needed versatility at the position. He completed 3 of 4 passes for 88 yards and rushed for four TDs.

Christian Portale, QB, Garnet Valley: Portale doesn’t have to be the star in what figures to be a very balanced Garnet Valley offense, but the senior signal caller showed last weekend that he can make plays with his feet. He’ll never be mistaken for All-Delco QB Ryan Corkery (in terms of his speed and ability to ellude tackles), but Portale showed what he could do against Upper Darby, rushing for 101 yards and two scores.

Ron Burrell, RB/DB, Delco Christian: I don’t have the stats, because we did not staff the Knights’ game at Annapolis Christian (Md.), but I felt it was necessary to mention one of the team’s best players. It sounded as though the Knights pulled off a pretty improbable comeback, erasing a 14-0, third-quarter deficit against a considerably bigger and more athletic team. Burrell had touchdown rushes of 3 and 7 yards in the game, including the game-winning scoring run. DCCS, a PIAA Class A program, is off to a 1-0 start.

Chris Galloway, RB/LB, Radnor: Galloway has been, rather quietly, one of the most underrated players in the county. Why? Well, it’s because he’s been a part of a struggling Radnor program that just hasn’t been able to hang with some of the top programs.

Maybe that’s all starting to change.

Galloway erupted for 198 yards and both Radnor TDs in a 14-7 win over Harriton. I’m willing to be that’s a game Radnor would have lost by two or three TDs last fall. Galloway moved from receiver/tight end to tailback, and the move is starting to pay dividends. After rushing for 128 yards in a tight loss to Archbishop Carroll, Galloway posted 198 yards on 11 carries vs. Harriton.

  1. i saw fisher’s comeback play against Haverford this past week. He’s only a junior and looks very athletic and comfortable back there. He maybe the best qtr back delco has seen by his senior year. HE has the arm and legs.
