Super 7: Week 3

#Delcofootball Week 3 Super 7:

1. Haverford School (2-0)

2. Ridley (2-0)

3. Academy Park (2-0)

4. Episcopal Academy (2-0)

5. Springfield (1-1)

6. Garnet Valley (1-1)

7. Upper Darby (2-0)

Under Consideration: Haverford (1-1), Interboro (1-1), Marple Newtown (2-0), Radnor (2-0).

NOTES: All-Delco QB Kevin Carter is off to a tremendous start. Through two weeks, the senior has passed for 596 yards yards and seven TDs. Carter and the Fords notched a 45-28 win over Archbishop Ryan and have scored 95 points in two games. They are not a finished product, but they’re No. 1 until proven otherwise.

Ridley rallied in the second half for a 25-20 win over Springfield and stays at No. 2. This is might be the best Green Raiders squad since 2010, when they finished undefeated in the regular season.

Academy Park is hot on Ridley’s heels for the No. 2. The Knights pummelled Penncrest 42-0 Friday night and an argument could be made they should be No. 1 team. The Knights welcome 0-2 Bonner-Prendergast to town Friday night.

Episcopal Academy moves from No. 5 to No. 4 this week. The Churchmen defeated a tough Conestoga team that many believe could win the Central League title.

Springfield falls to No. 5 as a date with 2-0 Radnor awaits. Garnet Valley recovered from a poor Week 1 showing against Unionville with an impressive blowout of Bonner. The Jags stay put at No. 6 as they get ready to travel to Phil Marion Field Friday night.

Finally, Upper Darby sits at No. 7 for the second week in a row following a 40-34 win over Frankford of the Public League. An otherwise lopsided game got a little too close at end, but the Royals managed to pull it out.

Season Outlook: Chester’s time is now

Remember to pick up the annual Daily Times High School  Football Preview in the Sept. 4 edition of the Daily Times. In it you’ll find full-page preview stories of all 22 teams in Delco, plus full schedules and other goodies.

Coach: Tony Beaty (second season)

2014 Record: 4-6 (3-2 Del Val League)

2014 In Two Sentences: It took some time for the Clippers to come together under first-year coach Beaty, but they were competitive in every game except for their season opener. A winning record in Del Val League competition (including a season-ending rout of Interboro in the pouring rain and mud) gave the Clippers a load of confidence going into the offseason.

Key Departures: Hasson Bush (WR-DB), Kquran Matthews (TE-DE).

Looking Ahead:

Chester QB Nahmir Ishmail

Is Chester expected to run the table and go undefeated? No, not many teams are. But are the Clippers talented  to point that they can win the Del Val League and become Delco football’s feel-good story of 2015? You better believe it.

Roughly 13 players from last fall are back on the roster. They have a monstrous Division I lineman who can flat-out dominate on both sides (D’Andre Dill), an athletic QB (Nahmir Ishmail) and a slew of  two-way skill competitors with big-play ability (Rashee Alexander, Ed Nelson Jr., Arlo Lee Jr.). So, let’s just say it: Chester has the chance to be very dangerous.

Players to Watch:  Dill (Sr. OL-DL), Ishmail (Sr. QB), Alexander (WR-FS), Nelson (SS-RB) and Lee (RB-LB) are crucial to the Clippers’ success in 2015, but they’re just the tip of the iceberg.

Dill, is a four-year starter who committed to Temple in the spring. Nelson is garnering interest from FCS schools. Lee was the team leader in tackles last fall, and Alexander led the team in interceptions.

Like Alexander, Nasheed McCaskill is a skilled wide receiver and defensive back. Naim Little, Desmond Hardy and Keyshaun Ash provide plenty of thump in the trenches.

Season Opener: Away vs. W.C. Henderson, Friday, Sept. 4, 7 p.m.

Season Outlook: Academy Park is primed for a Del Val League repeat

Remember to pick up the annual Daily Times High School  Football Preview in the Sept. 4 edition of the Daily Times. In it you’ll find full-page preview stories of all 22 teams in Delco, plus full schedules and other goodies.

Coach: Jason Vosheski (11th season)

2014 Record: 8-3 (4-0 Del Val League)

2014 In Two Sentences: Academy Park clinched its second Del Val League title in three years on the final weekend of the regular season, edging Glen Mills in a two-overtime thriller, 20-19. The Knights went to the District One Class AAA playoffs again and recorded their fifth straight winning season under Vosheski, not bad for a team that was supposed to be rebuilding on the heels of winning its first District One championship.

Key Departures: Allon Ruffin (QB), Dante Ghee (DE), Josh Ingram (WR).

Looking Ahead: The Knights are built to win again, as even with the loss of their starting

RB Jermain e Wesley rushed for a team-high 906 yards and seven touchdowns last fall.

quarterback (Ruffin) and All-Delco defensive end (Ghee), they have 12 players that performed either starting or ancillary roles on varsity last fall.

During their run of playoff appearances the Knights have been praised for their athleticism. And those “athlete-types” usually turn into pretty good football players under Vosheski’s watch. Expect the same kind of script this year, but with better discipline (penalties hurt) and execution. The ceiling is high…

Players to Watch:  Jeremy Dembry (Sr. ATH), Jermaine Wesley (Sr. RB), Jawan Collins (WR) accounted for the majority of the Knights’ offensive production last year. Nykeal Jalloh, Marion Holmes, Chris Thomas and Dan Kemp return on the line.

Clarence Buchanan (DB) was an All-Delco defensive back in 2014, tying for the county lead in interceptions with six. Teddy Wright (FS) and Anthony Balogh (LB) have a knack for big plays on defense..

Coach’s Corner: “We return a lot of starters from last year’s team, which is always a good thing. We also have a lot of talent in the junior and sophomore classes, so some of those players will also play a vital role during the season,” Vosheski said. “We have pretty good team speed as well. With all of the players that we have  returning, we lack experience at a few key positions. We’re also looking for some hidden leaders that can guide the team to it’s overall goal.”

Season Opener: Away vs. West Chester East, Friday, Sept. 4, 7 p.m.

Former Academy Park RB Wesley in trouble with law again

LeVaun Wesley, an All-Delco running back for Academy Park in the late-1990s whose career as a Division I player was marred by legal trouble, was back behind bars again last week.

The alleged crack cocaine dealer, of Sharon Hill, is charged with possession with the intent to deliver drugs, aggravated assault and related offenses following his May 21 arrest.

This isn’t Wesley’s first dustup with the law. In 2002,  he pleaded guilty in the 2000 attempted murder of a Temple University student. Also in 2002, Wesley was one of seven area men indicted at the federal level on charges of passing counterfit bills while out on bail for the attempted murder case.

Wesley never played a down for Temple.

Hero Bowl 2015: Change was necessary after two years of nonsense

A few things to know about the 39th annual Delaware County Hero Bowl

  • Most important — and I think it has been lost on the participants in recent years — is the game is played for a tremendous cause. It’s a charity game for the Delco Hero Scholarship Fund, which provides educational financial assistance for children of police officers, firefighters and medical personnel who died in the line of duty. This reason — and only this reason — is why the game still exists. Sure, the games serves as a final hurrah for graduating seniors, but that pales in comparison to the true purpose of the Hero Bowl
  • Those asking for rosters…I have the “East” squad, but still waiting on the other. When I have them both, I’ll post. I’ve put in multiple requests.
  • The head coaches are Delco Christian’s Drew Pearson (“East”) and Chester High’s Tony Beaty (“West)
  • The game is no longer at Widener University (no surprise there after two straight years of nonsense caused by players who brought disgrace, shame and embarrassment to a great Delco tradition). The game is Thursday, May 28 at Cardinal O’Hara High School.
  • Because of the fighting/brawling/ridiculous behavior that plagued and brought great shame to the Hero Bowl the last two years…the makeup of both teams has changed a little. It was rather clear that the old “Del Val/Catholic League vs Central League” concept wasn’t working. Members of Del Val schools were picking fights with players from Central League schools, and vice versa. Stupid behavior calls for change… so this year, both teams are mixed with Central/Catholic/Del Val/Inter-Ac schools….
  • Team East consists of Academy Park, Interboro, Penn Wood, Springfield, Strath Haven, Haverford, Upper Darby, Bonner-Prendergast, Haverford School, Delco Christian and Sun Valley. Team West consists of Chester, Chichester. Glen Mills, Garnet Valley, Penncrest, Ridley, Marple Newtown, Archbishop Carroll, Cardinal O’Hara and Episcopal Academy.

Chester’s Dill verbals to Temple; Springfield’s Archibong offered

A source confirmed Wednesday night that Chester star lineman D’Andre Dill has verbally committed to Temple University.

In addition, Temple has offered a scholarship to Springfield defensive end Dan Archibong.

Chester’s D’Andre Dill is slated to be a Temple Owl beginning in 2016.

Dill is a mountainous, 6-3, 240-pound rising senior. He thrived both ways for the Clippers the last two years. He’s considered one of the top players at his position in Delco for the 2015 season. Last fall, he earned All-Delco second-team honors as he helped the Clippers to a much-improved season.

The Inquirer also reported on Dill’s commitment via Twitter.
